In 2011, the internship program will be participated in by 11 medical faculties with 2,000 doctors, namely Andalas university (West Sumatra), University of Indonesia (Jakarta), Gadjah Mada university (Yogyakarta), Ciputat State Islamic University (Banten) and Airlangga university (East Java).
The program will also be conducted at the medical faculties of Padjadjaran university (Bandung, West Java), General Soedirman university (Purwokerto, Central Java), Sultan Agung university (Semarang, Central Java), Hasanuddin university (Makassar, South Sulawesi), Bandung Islamic university (West Java) and Tanjung Pura university (Pontianak. West Kalimantan).
The Health Ministry has set itself the target of having about 8,000 to 10,000 newly graduated doctors placed as interns at 71 medical faculties across Indonesia in 2014, according to its chief.
Health Minister Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih said here Wednesday her ministry continued to involve newly graduated doctors in its doctors` internship program.
"Because the internship program is an advanced program for the new doctors after completing their education at medical school," Endang added.
She said internship programs were for the first time held at two medical faculties, namely the University of Indonesia`s medical faculty in Jakarta and Andalas university, West Sumatra, with participants totaling 401 doctors with a total budget of nine billion rupiahs from the Health Ministry.
In West Sumatra, the first class conducted since March 2010 had 92 doctors, the second class in April 64 doctors, the third class in August 49 doctors and the fourth class with 13 doctors.
Meanwhile, at the medical faculty of University of Indonesia, the program started in October with 183 doctors who started the program in 14 hospitals in West Java, Endang noted.
